Mathematics offers children a powerful way of communicating. They learn to explore and explain their ideas using symbols, diagrams and spoken and written language.
At Stamford Hill Primary School we believe that mathematics is an essential tool for everyday life and supports learning across the curriculum. It helps children make sense of the numbers, patterns and shapes they see in the world around them and makes a crucial contribution to their development as successful learners. Mathematics stimulates curiosity, fosters creativity and equips children with the skills they need in life beyond school.
We want children to be confident in mathematics and to be able to apply their knowledge to make sense of the world around them. It is our aim to develop:
a positive attitude towards mathematics
competence and confident in mathematical knowledge, concepts and skills (children to be secure with numbers and number system)
an ability to solve mathematical problems, to reason, to think logically and work systematically and accurately.
the ability to solve problems through decision making and reasoning in a range of contexts (Promoting enjoyment and enthusiasm for learning mathematics through practical activity, exploration and discussions)
an ability to communicate mathematics and to work both independently and collaboratively with others.
We follow the New National Curriculum for Mathematics and each day all classes have structured maths lessons. The math lessons have a clear focus on direct, instructional teaching and interactive oral work. The children take part in individual, group and whole class work to carry out a range of activities across the areas of number, calculating, data handling, problem solving, shape, space and measures.
Mathematics Calculation Policy
At Stamford Hill we have a mathematics calculation policy in place to provide consistency in the teaching of calculation skills across the school and to ensure consistency and progression in our approach to calculation.
Mathletics is the next generation in learning; helping pupils to enjoy maths and improve their results. Pupils access this educational tool globally. At Stamford Hill, pupils have access to mathletics securely through their own username and password. They are also able to access this software at home and the mathletics app can also be downloaded. Homework is set through matheletics once a fortnight.
Pupils can also participate in world maths day, competing against pupils around the world to try and earn the most points for demonstrating their maths knowledge.
Ocean Maths Workshop
At Stamford Hill Primary we have incorporated the ocean maths project into maths. Regular workshops are held in school for parents to join their children and take part in games and activities to learn more about how Ocean maths works. Pupils are provided with packs which contain equipment to enable them to play games and carry out the activities at home with their parents.
At Stamford Hill we host a Maths Puzzle Challenge day. Children across the school take part in practical problem solving games and investigations to help develop thinking skills, team skills and communication skills. At the end of the day we invite parents to come along and take part working with their children on problem solving games.
