In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), childrens’ interests and lines of enquiry are used as a vehicle for developing their skills across the curriculum, throughout the year. The curriculum is broken down into seven areas of learning.
The seven areas of learning are split into ‘prime’ and ‘specific’ areas and are as follows:
The ‘prime areas’
- Personal Social and Emotional Development
- Communication and language
- Physical development
The ‘specific areas’
- Understanding the world
- Expressive art and design
We also continually promote the ‘Characteristics of Effective Learning’ as outlined in development matters which are:
- playing and exploring
- active learning
- creating and thinking critically
The ‘Development Matters’ document contains a wealth of information about how children learn and develop throughout the EYFS, and can be accessed via the following link: http://www.foundationyears.org.uk/files/2012/03/Development-Matters-FINAL-PRINT-AMENDED.pdf
